    Science@Work Lecture

Lyndon South Auditorium, 242 Front Street
Learn about depression and the teenage brain with Tabor Academy during the third Science@Work lecture of the season.

Dr. Sage Aronson is in the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego, where he studies the neurobiological underpinnings of how the brain processes valence (whether something is good or bad) and how the dysregulation of these systems can lead to depression. In addition to his role as a graduate student, in 2017, he started a company, Neurophotometrics, that manufactures an imaging device to record how signals propagate throughout the brain.

Many parts of the brain are involved in determining whether a particular experience or action is perceived to be good or bad. Our ability to appropriately assign these valence signals is fundamental to our everyday life. But what happens when this delicately balanced circuitry gets thrown out of balance?

In this talk, Dr. Aronson will provide an overview of what we know about how the brain assigns and processes valence, how individual symptoms of depression can be caused by the up- or down-regulation of individual components of this circuitry, and positive steps we can take to help prevent the onset of depression at a young age.

The lecture is free and open to the public on February 11 at 6:30 PM in the Lyndon South Auditorium in the Stroud Academic Center at 242 Front Street, Marion, MA.

  • Winter Musical

Tabor Academy invites the public to their performance of their winter musical, Heathers: The Musical (HSE) on February 14-16 at 7:30 PM.

Heathers: The Musical, a satire dealing with the challenges of teen life, became an Off-Broadway hit in 2014. Because the subject matter was so relevant to high schools, the creators of the show, Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, worked closely with Pearce High School in Richardson, TX, from 2015 through 2016 to develop a “toned-down,” high school edition (HSE) of the show. Tabor’s director, Mark Howland said, “While Heathers: The Musical (HSE) delves into such hot-button topics as body shaming, sexual harassment, and suicide, it does so with humor and sensitivity. The creators have claimed in fact that they feel the show is about female empowerment. Rather than avoid these taboo topics, Heathers: The Musical (HSE) tackles them head on but through the lens of satire, showing us that high schoolers need to be kinder to each other, and adults who work with them need to be more clued in. Our goal is that the show be a catalyst for the school community to further awareness and empathy.”

The show runs February 14, 15, 16 at 7:30 PM in Tabor’s Fireman Center for the Performing Arts in Hoyt Hall at 245 Front Street, Marion. It is free and open to the public, no tickets or reservations required.

Freshman and sophomore parents, you stand to gain the most! Tabor has partnered with Smart Track College Funding, national leaders in helping families better estimate, prepare for, and pay less for college, to provide our families with comprehensive professional guidance in this crucial area. Chris and Kevin Campbell are the Smart Track coaches for Tabor. They are extremely knowledgeable and their expertise will be a welcome asset as you navigate this labyrinth. • Saturday School Day with Bobby Petrocelli

Motivational Speaker, Bobby Petrocelli, will join us for our February Saturday School Day.  The program will be livestreamed on our Facebook page.

Mr. Petrocelli endured the loss of his wife when a drunk driver crashed into his home. Finding his voice and commitment to live after this freak accident helped him discover his purpose as a speaker, author, educator and coach. His zest for life and charismatic personality help spread his messages of self-love, choice, and the power of a strong foundation. His talks emphasize the reality that each of us matter and that we must be who we are and share our love and talent with the world in order to make a difference.

Petrocelli has worked with educational groups, community organizations, professional sports and collegiate teams as well as corporations and medical groups. He has been featured on TV on MSNBC, Lifetime and the Family Channel and was awarded the prestigious Telly Award for his appearance on Overcoming Obstacles. He is the author of 18 motivational books such as You Matter, It Doesn't; 10 Seconds will Change your Life Forever; Triumph over Tragedy; and Unshakeable Character. Learn more at his website.

We look forward to welcoming Mr. Petrocelli, the cousin of our Director of Counseling, Dan Petrocelli, for an uplifting morning. Small group activities will follow his presentation.

    Visiting Artist Exhibit and Talk

The ceramics program at Tabor Academy will host potter Michelle Grey as this year’s Tomlinson Visiting Artist in Ceramics from Monday, February 25 through Thursday, February 28.  Michelle will give practical workshops on pottery design and the ceramic surface in the Braitmayer Art Center during classes Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

On Monday evening, February 25 from 6:45 – 7:30 pm, Michelle will present an image illustrated talk about her life as an art potter, exploring the history of her work with clay and sharing the experiences and ideas that are important to her as an artist. This talk will be held in the ceramic studio in the Braitmayer Art Center and is free and open to the public.  An exhibition of her work will be on view in the gallery adjacent to the ceramic studio during her stay on campus.

Michelle is a young potter, having graduated in 2017 from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics.  She worked for a year as a post-baccalaureate student in the ceramics program at the University of Massachusetts, and also as a summer resident artist at Tabor alumnus, Charlie Barmonde’s ceramic art gallery and studio, Arch Ceramics, in Tiverton, Rhode Island.  Michelle is currently a resident artist in ceramics at the Worcester Center for the Arts.

Michelle produces functional, artistic ceramics working in porcelain and with the exciting soda-firing process.  Her work balances the softness of clay with the hard edge geometric surface design work in glaze and color, producing useful and artistically dynamic handmade vessels of many types.  Her beautiful work will be available for purchase.
