Paul Hughes '79 was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Tabor Academy. He earned eight varsity letters in football, wrestling and lacrosse. He stood out for his leadership, hard work and relentless drive. In '77 and '78 he co-captained the football team, placed 2nd in the Class "A" Wrestling Championship and 1st place in '79. His senior year, Paul earned 1st place in the heavy-weight division at the National Prep School Wrestling Championship (Lehigh Tournament). On the lacrosse field, Paul's defensive presence forced opponents to modify game plans because of his ability to disrupt their plays. Paul was one of the most beloved individuals at Tabor and this was never more obvious than in the academic halls where everyone always gave a "shout out" to Baby Huey! No one had a bigger smile, more friendly greeting or better one line zinger than Paul.

After Tabor, Paul went to the University of Maine where he played both football and wrestling. In football, he was a top player all four years on the Black Bear's offensive line and a member of the '81 Yankee Conference Co-Champion Football team. In all four years of wrestling, Paul placed 1st in the Northern New England Wrestling Championship and, like at Tabor, his senior year he placed 1st in the New England Wrestling Championship.

Throughout his life, Paul has remained an individual of outstanding character, always treating his teammates, family, friends and clients with honesty, commitment and respect. These qualities have driven him to lead a successful life both personally and in business, as owner of his family's construction company.
