During her two years at Tabor, Kate Dwyer Teravainen played field hockey, ice hockey, squash, and lacrosse and was a 3-season varsity athlete. Before Tabor, her first love was tennis. She won the Cape and Islands Doubles Championship with her sister when she was in just the seventh grade and was the number one tennis player at Sandwich High School for two years before transferring to the School by the Sea.
Her athletic prowess and skill in every aspect of the game led the Seawolves to one victory after another and improved the level of play of her teammates. An outstanding all-around athlete, Dwyer earned varsity letters in field hockey, lacrosse, and squash at Tabor, adding to those she received for tennis and basketball at Sandwich High.
She was named co-captain and most improved player in field hockey her junior year and was the leading scorer, most valuable player, and co-captain again her senior year, leading the team to an 18-1-2 record. She helped lead the ’89 squad to become New England Co-Champions, a title shared with St. Paul’s due to heavy rains on the scheduled game day. In addition, she was the most improved player and most valuable player on the girl’s varsity squash team her senior year.
Dwyer’s most notable achievements were in field hockey. As a sophomore, she was named to the Boston Globe All Scholastic Team. She was named to the U.S. Field Hockey Association’s High School All-American Team two years in a row, an honor achieved by only one other athlete that year. As a junior, she was selected to participate in the U.S. Olympic Developmental Program, reaching a level rarely attained by a high school player.
Dwyer earned a full scholarship for field hockey to Duke University, where she played throughout her four years and was named Atlantic Coast Conference Senior All Star before graduating in 1993. Today she lives on the Cape with her family and is most proud of her accomplishments as mother to her four children.
