Russell "Russ" Boardman '63, a native of Mattapoisett, MA, came to Tabor Academy in 1959 and always prided himself on being a well-rounded student-athlete. As a sophomore, Russ earned his spot on both the varsity football team and the 1961 Undefeated Basketball team and, by senior ear, he was elected co-captain of both the football and basketball teams. On the playing field, his hard-work and relentless drive led his teams to great success. Beyond athletics, Russ was a leader in the Tabor community through his avid involvement in the school's student council, clubs and committees. Russ' leadership and positive nature won the respect of almost everyone at Tabor, not only for his sincere manner, but also for his spirit and honest devotion to his teams. His senior year, Russ was elected president of Tabor's Captains Club, a much coveted position among the elite of the varsity sports.
After Tabor, Russ attend the University of Vermont where he played varsity basketball and studied Business and Political Science. Russ joined the school's Army ROTC program and was a member of the Delta Psi fraternity. Following graduation, he joined the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and soon went on to become a 1st Lieutenant as Commander of Air Defense NATO Missile Site in Germany. After the military, Russ joined the newsprint industry in Portland, OR, first working for the sales management team of Boise Cascade and then as the U.S. National Vice President of Newsprint Sales for Norske Skog of Norway. In 1997, Russ started Boardman Pulp and Paper selling paper products throughout the USA until his retirement in 2014.
Beyond his professional career, Russ continued to coach youth basketball, baseball and soccer. He also was a mentor for Friends of the Children in Portland, OR, an organization that helps nurture and teach positive values to at-risk kids. Today, Russ lives in Scottsdale, AZ, with his wife Mary Anne. It is no surprise that Russ' athletic ability and skills run deep in his genes as two of his children went on to play basketball in college; his son, Scott, played at the University of San Diego and his daughter, Betsy, played for Arizona State University.
