Varsity Sailing
Charlie Ogletree "85, a native of Columbia, NC, came to Tabor Academy in 1982 as a sophomore and quickly proved to be an exceptional skipper for Tabor's elite varsity sailing team. Under the leadership of Coach Toby Baker, Charlie worked hard to help the squad secure many impressive victories during his years at Tabor. One of his most memorable wins was Charlie's first year at Tabor, where the team won the 1983 National Championship. On Tabor's European sailing tour in 1983, Coach Baker led the way, helping Charlie and his teammates grow as adults. It was during this tour, that Charlie really broadened his horizons and sharpened his racing skills against international competition.
Following Tabor, Charlie attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, where he competed on the University's varsity sailing team and was named All-American his senior year. Charlie was a key part of what is considered one of the best college sailing teams in history. In 1989, the OD Sailing team, with five All-American sailors, were the National Champions and Fowle Trophy winner. The team went on to secure the Team Race World Championship win in England on the BUSA tour.
Charlie's sailing career continued after college where he became a four time Olympic Games competitor for the U.S. Sailing team, from 1996 to 2008. In 2004, Charlie was elected as captain for the U.S. Sailing team, which went on to win the silver medal in the Tornado. Beyond the Olympics, he continues to lead a successful sailing career with multiple records and victories on a national and international level in both multihull and keelboat racing. Charlie was involved with the Tour de France à la Voile, as well as 3 America's Cup teams, 2 with Oracle and one with China Team.
Today, Charlie juggles the demands of managing a professional racing team of multiple large boats as well as competing on these race boats. During the past 4 years with this program, Charlie has managed the build of 3 yachts: a 60-foot yacht, a 115-foot yacht and a 144-foot yacht. Charlie lives in Sausalito, CA, with his wife, Lizz.
