1995 Varsity Girls' Basketball

New England "Class B" Champions

Unfinished business--that was the motto of the 1995 Varsity Girls' Basketball team. The core of this team had lost in the championship game the year before, but they knew the promise and potential they possessed when working together on the hardwood. They were aggressive on defense and skilled on offense. They played with confidence and a swagger that comes from knowing your talent.

After playing the most difficult schedule of any Class B team that season, the team found themselves on the bubble to make the tournament. A call from the seeding committee revealed that Tabor was the seven seed. With a challenging path in front of them, the captains called a meeting to focus the girls. "There isn't a team in this tournament we can't beat," one player said, and everyone agreed. They would have to win three games on the road against higher seeds. Tabor would face the two seed in the first round, a very successful Brooks team; but behind Emily Roller's thirty-three point performance, the team advanced to face the three seed, Nobles, in the semi-final game. A more balanced attack from the Seawolves sparked by big contributions from Shannon McGrath Leary '95 and Crystal Carlton Flynn '95 lifted Tabor to a come-from-behind win and a trip to the finals to face the one seed, Lawrence Academy. Emily Roller '95 hit both ends of a one-and-one to put the team up by five with less than a minute to play. Lawrence scored to make it a single possession game with four seconds left on the clock, but when the horn went off with the ball in McGrath's hands, the celebration began. No other team has gone on the road and upset the one, two, and three seeds en route to a championship. They were one of Tabor's first great girls' basketball teams, and their efforts were the foundation upon which the program was built.
