New England Prep-School Lacrosse Champions

In 1972, the epicenter of world lacrosse was securely seated in Baltimore, MD and Long Island, NY. It was unheard of for a New England prep-school to travel to Maryland and hold their own, especially against the U.S. Naval Academy Plebes, Johns Hopkins JV's, and famous Gilman Prep. However, Tabor's 1972 Varsity Boys' Lacrosse team was confident, talented, and unafraid. After returning north and opening the season against Bethpage HS Long Island, this team beat all the best in New England, including a first ever victory over perennial powerhouse Andover, Newton North and the Harvard Freshman lacrosse team. The 1972 team closed with a 13-1 season.

That's the record, who were these guys? This was a tight knit, fun loving group of highly skilled athletes who loved the game of lacrosse. The team was fortunate to have one of the best leaders and most successful athletes in Tabor's history, David Barker "72. Barker's co-captain was the team's outstanding goalie, Scott Gray '72. Rob Hollis '73 and Hugh Dawson '72 were the team's offensive standouts, with Hollis displaying wizardry and a terrific field sense. Dawson was a powerful face-off middie, unstoppable one-on-one. Barker and John Threshie '73 led a tough, stingy defense anchored by Gray in the goal. The entire team had tremendous stick skills and most were ambidextrous, a huge advantage, not common to most teams back then. In most games, the team's stick skills and lacrosse IQ made them the better team, and on more than one occasion it was the whole team's toughness that prevailed--most notably remembered against both Andover and Newton North. This team went on to become New England Prep-School Champions and Coach Doty was named Coach of the Year in New England by the United States Lacrosse Coaches Association. Their hard work and success put New England lacrosse on the national map. For Coaches Doty and Walsh, the 1972 Varsity Boys' Lacrosse team was a joy and long remembered after the close of this championship season.
