Hooray for Hollywood? Even before the pandemic forced everyone inside, at-home entertainment, galvanized by an array of streaming services, had established itself as a practicable alternative to the movie theater experience–shorter attention spans, rising ticket prices, and binge consumption are only a few reasons why. While the Hollywood blockbuster may still find a home and viable audience on the silver screen, more and more films, especially independent and low-budget productions, will find their way to in-home services like Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Hulu, and YouTube TV. What does this mean for a 100-year-old entertainment model and major film studios like Columbia, Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros., and Universal?

Studies suggest that no single leadership style is appropriate in all circumstances and that history’s best leaders have utilized multiple styles depending on the people, situation, and timing they encounter. Drawing from his experience as Chairman and CEO of Suffolk, one of the leading privately held general building contractors in the country, John Fish ’78 will provide valuable insight on business leadership and current trends in the economy and real estate industry both locally and nationally. For over four decades, Mr. Fish has moved the needle as a business leader because of his willingness to invest in talented individuals, his ability to drive innovative programs, and his propensity to build dynamic projects. All of this is testament to his ability to embrace leadership behaviors that are often viewed at different ends of the leadership spectrum.

Signed by President Richard Nixon on June 23, 1972, Title IX states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” While Title IX’s language says nothing specifically about athletics, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare determined that because educational institutions receive federal funding, all aspects of the school’s operations were covered by Title IX, including sports. Today, due to this landmark legislation, Tabor girls compete in 15 varsity sports, including three coed programs. To mark its 50th anniversary, this month’s Forecasters episode invites a group of alumnae including Nicole DeBlois Greene ’95, Gia Doonan ’13, Ellie Pierce ’84, Amy Richards ’88, and Cat Barry ’20 to celebrate, critique, and challenge our thinking about the importance of Title IX and its legacy.

Harnessing renewable energy has been with us at least since the first time someone captured energy from a fast-flowing river to grind wheat. Today, with a focus on reducing our carbon footprint, we are turning to renewable energy to solve one of the world’s most urgent problems—climate change. Initiatives are broad; from local renewable energy entrepreneurs to regional power grids reducing their carbon footprint, to massive multinational corporations taking on renewable energy projects, increased production of electric vehicles, to entire markets trading in green credits to name just a few; and not to mention the consumption side of the green equation. During this episode of the Forecasters Series, talented, dedicated, and highly experienced alumni Jessica Shor '09, John P. Ciovacco '83, Parker Littlehale '96, Chris Benzak '93, and Lawrence Mott '80 with impressive resumes in wind, solar, biodiesel, and geothermal will share their forecast on the future of renewable energy.
