We're Back!: Special Olympics Young Athletes Student Reflection
- Session 5
Today was our first indoor session of the year. Around 15 of us Tabor students gathered at 9:30am to set up the gym with a fun obstacle course, scarf games, cone castles and a lot of other things to play with for our Level 1 athletes and a station revolving around basketball for our Level 2 athletes. We were a little nervous to see how the athletes would adjust to being in a more confided space indoors but they adjusted perfectly. Just as we finished setting up and 10:00am rolled around our first athletes walked through the bay doors ready to take on the obstacle course. I was fortunate enough to meet an amazing young girl named Laura today. As soon as she came running through the doors and playing with every toy in her sight, I knew that we were in for some fun today. After giving the athletes some time to settle in, we soon met in the middle to do our warm-up stretch, led by Kayla and Lara. After, we split up into the two-level groups. The older athletes took on basketball stations and learned how to pass and shoot a basketball. The Level 1 athletes worked on their obstacle course skills and gross motor skills. To end today’s session, we again met in the middle and brought out a group favorite, the parachute!! The athletes loved this. As a final activity of the day, led by Addy, we challenged ourselves to do the head-shoulders-knees-and-toes dance as fast as we could.
