Dear Sailing Alums and present parents,
The Seawolves finished a very successful 2005 campaign. We entered the season with a squad that was very young and inexperienced. With only three returning letter winners and 16 freshmen, the coaching staff (Rob Hurd, Cindy Muther, Chris Conley, Eric Hartell, Dave Wilson, Dave Bill) knew it was going to be a struggle from the beginning to end. Growing pains accompanied the team as we fought through a difficult 18-7 regular season waiting for the new sailors to understand the complexities of team racing.
At the New England fleet racing championship (O’Day Trophy), hosted by Tabor, the Seawolves used the familiarity of Sippican Harbor and the breezy conditions to their advantage finishing second and qualifying for nationals. The Mallory was sailed in Vanguard-15s at the Port Angeles YC on Washington’s Olympic peninsular. The competition was strong and inconsistent results placed the Seawolves 10th in the 20-boat fleet.
The maturation of the squad was completed at the end of the season as Tabor sweep the New England Team Racing Championship (Mark Trophy) for the 21st time, besting St George’s, Hotchkiss, and Milton in the process. The Seawolves rolled through the qualifying round at 7-0 and won their first four races in the championship round to clinched victory with 2 races to go. The squad headed south the next weekend to the US Sailing Center Martin County, FL to compete in the ISSA National Team Racing Championship for the Toby Baker Trophy. The sailors competed hard and earned a 4th place finish for the second year in a row.
While the squad will miss the ten graduating seniors (co-captain Matt Duggan, co-captain Wes Cain, James Aisenberg, Andrew Burke, Mary Frances Griffith, Julia Hibbard, Mimi Mattiasen, Graham McGrath, Alan Platner, and Candace Whipple), the core of returning sailors have a little more experience and are not so young anymore; they should be able to maintain the high standard set by the class of 2005.
The squad voted Schuyler Hemmerdinger ’08 Most Improved, Sean Bouchard 08 was named Rookie of the Year, and Matt Duggan 05 was honored with the Braitmayer Award for conspicuous contribution to the sport of sailing at Tabor. The sailing captain-elect for 2006 are Jesse Kirkland ’06 and Kathryn Metscher 06.
Many Tabor sailing alums made their presence know at the college sailing nationals, held on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas this earlier this month. Augusta Nadler ’06 (Tabor 2002) led Hobart-William Smith Colleges to National Championships in Dinghies and Team Racing and Anne Bowen ’05 (Tabor 2001) was third in B-division and an instrumental part of the Cougar’s second place finish at Women’s Nationals. Also participating at college sailing nationals were Katie Whitman (US Naval Academy 2007, Tabor 2003), Maddy Eustis (Eckerd 2005; Tabor 2000), Georgetown University Coach Mike Callahan (Tabor 1993), Barbara Hall (Georgetown 2005, Tabor 2001) and DJ Driscoll (Eckerd 2006; Tabor 2002). I may have missed as few as the ICSA did not publish the race participation forms from Team Racing Nationals. My apologies to those sailors; feel free to send me more names.
Three Tabor sailing alums were named to the All-American List:
Augusta Nadler (Hobart/William Smith Colleges ’06, Tabor ’02) All American Crew
Dave Siegal (Tufts 06, Tabor ’02) - Honorable Mention All American Skipper
Anne Bowen (College of Charleston 05, Tabor ’01) Honorable Mention Women’s All- American Skipper
