Tabor Academy was founded in 1876 as a boarding and day school for students from around the country and the world. That tradition remains today. Three hundred and fifty students live in Tabor’s sixteen dormitories and hail from twenty-three states and fourteen foreign countries. This mingling of diverse personalities and cultures makes dormitory life an education in itself.
Another hallmark of the Tabor boarding experience are our small houses and dormitories. After the freshman year, Tabor boarding students can live in a variety residential experiences, all notably small. Our largest dormitory has just thirty-two students; the smallest has just five. There are a minimum of three adults associated with each dormitory, and sometimes as many as six. Keeping things small, where residents, both students and faculty, know each other well creates the richness that is the boarding experience at Tabor.
Freshman housing is another hallmark of the Tabor residential experience. Our freshmen, all new to Tabor, live together in Lillard Hall, the largest of our waterfront dormitories. Taking advantage of our one larger space in this way allows us to create a freshman boarding experience consistent for each member of the class as they learn together the ins and outs of boarding life. The freshman class has its own Dean, who lives in Lillard Hall, and who implements a freshman residential curriculum that supplements the Strategies for Success course all freshman take during the academic day. After the freshman year, students then go on to live in one of the smaller dormitories, where they welcome between thirty and forty new students each year.
