At the core of Tabor's academic mission is the premise that motivated, engaged students should readily find support and guidance from equally motivated and engaged instructors. With class size averaging twelve students, and a student-to-faculty ratio of 7:1, the opportunity for individual attention and personalized instruction is central to the ethos of the community. The majority of the teaching faculty also serve as house parents, advisors, coaches and activity heads, fostering connections between individual teachers and students on many levels. A formal extra help time block is available to all students each morning prior to the beginning of the academic day. All teachers are available for one-on-one assistance during this period (7:30-8:00 a.m.). Extra help is also readily available at other times during the day, afternoon or evening by arrangement between student and teacher.
Tabor also operates an Academic Resource Center (the ARC) staffed by faculty who work with students to develop the skills and strategies necessary for academic success. Individualized instruction and support are offered in the areas of organization, time management, reading comprehension, note taking, test taking, proofreading, and basic writing and math skills. The ARC is located on the second floor of the Hayden Library and is open throughout the school day whenever there are classes. While some students will seek support on a regularly scheduled basis, others prefer to come only when specific help is needed. Drop-ins are always welcome.
