Sign-Out Procedure For A Boarding Student

The most important RULE your child needs to follow when making plans with you, or someone else, to be away overnight is that he/she must sign out on the “sign-out computers” in the Academic Center. Overnights usually take place on weekends, but on occasion a student will be off-campus overnight during the week for a valid reason.*

Steps to be taken to assure a legal sign-out:

  • Your child MUST sign out BEFORE the Academic Center closes on WEDNESDAY NIGHT of the week he/she is leaving for the weekend. You and your boarder should have a discussion of plans prior to Wednesday’s deadline (hopefully no later than Monday or Tuesday before the weekend a child will be away).
  • A boarder may not leave campus overnight until the last commitment of the week has been completed (i.e. Saturday classes, games, practices, Saturday morning work detail, etc.). The boarder must verify this on the computer form.
  • As a parent, your obligation is to call, e-mail, or fax a permission to the Dean’s Office no later than noon on Friday before the weekend in question. Earlier in the week is preferable, but permissions for weeks ahead of time are not a good idea.
  • A host is required to notify the Dean’s Office of an invitation in the same manner as a parent and also before noon on Friday.
  • In order to make sure that your son or daughter’s WEEKEND has been APPROVED, he/she must ALWAYS check the Dean’s Office Bulletin Board on Friday BEFORE leaving campus. If the weekend has not been approved at that time, your child should check with the Dean’s office (specifically Mrs. Palmer) to determine the reason ~ BEFORE he/she makes what could be an unnecessary call home.

The Dean’s Office takes its responsibility very seriously regarding your child’s whereabouts when he/she is away from Tabor. Experience has taught us to implement the steps described above.

If there are changes to your child's plans during a weekend, or if they should need anything at all, the Duty Dean is the person to call. The weekend duty roster is here for your convenience.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Donna Palmer in the Dean’s Office, ext. 2222.

*Please note: an off-campus permission form does NOT replace the computer sign-out obligation. The off-campus permission form is use to notify classroom teachers that a student will be missing class for various excusable reasons (college trips, medical appointments, etc.), but the computer sign-out is used to notify the dormparent that a boarder will be missing from the dormitory.
